Character.AI is still the biggest character roleplay app in the world, and in 2026 it is also the one most people are trying to leave. The filter fires on tame romance, the free tier now runs mid-chat ads and a swipe meter, adults are being bounced by age checks, and the outage trackers show a bad month every month. I know this because I keep a Character.AI account purely to see what sends people looking for Character AI alternatives, and this year it has not been hard to keep up.
This list is the nine apps I would actually point someone to, tested the way I test everything: free tier first, then the cheapest paid plan on my own card, the same three conversation scripts, memory checked across a week, privacy policy read in full. Prices are from each platform's own pricing page or app-store listing, checked September 22, 2026, and where a number could not be confirmed on an official page I say so instead of rounding it off.
Two rules shaped the ranking. First, a real replacement has to do the thing Character.AI does, which is a big library of user-made characters you can jump into without setup; single-companion apps like Kindroid and Nomi are here because people leave for them, but they are ranked as what they are. Second, this is not an adult page. Each entry says plainly whether the app allows NSFW roleplay, with category words only, so you know before you sign up which ones are looser than Character.AI and which are stricter.
Three platforms on this list pay me a commission (SpicyChat, CrushOn.ai and Nomi). The number one spot does not, and never has. That is the point: if the ranking were for sale, Joyland would not be at the top and Talkie would not be on it at all.

Joyland AI is the closest thing to Character.AI with the filter loosened, which is exactly why its refugees keep landing on it. The format is identical: a Discover page of user-made characters sorted into thirteen categories (Anime, Romance, RPG, Game Characters, Movie and TV, VTuber and so on), a creation tool that takes a name, a 100-word description and a greeting, and a chat window with personas and pinned memory. The difference is that the romantic and dramatic scenes Character.AI shuts down run here without the constant deflections.
The free tier is the reason it ranks first. Joyland's plan page gives free users a daily credit refill (10 per the plan page; independent tests in 2026 report about 50), the free chat model, three personas and the whole public library, with ads. That is enough for a couple of real scenes a day, which is more than Character.AI's ad-interrupted, swipe-metered free plan now offers. Standard at $9.99 a month (an early-adopter price against a $19.99 list) or $107.99 a year removes the meter and ads and unlocks the four paid chat models; Premium at $19.99 a month or $191.99 a year adds unlimited credits and long-term memory.
NSFW: limited. Joyland is looser than Character.AI and its iOS listing openly mentions NSFW content, but the free tier blocks adult content, the per-chat toggle is for verified adults on paid plans, and the terms ban real or photorealistic sexual images and any minor characters outright. The bigger problem is that the filter is inconsistent: it produced a soft block on a completely tame romantic exchange in my test, and users on the subreddit and in app-store reviews report the same thing constantly. A strict filter is a choice; an unpredictable one breaks scenes.
Memory is the other honest caveat. On Free it is context within the current conversation only, so a storyline continued the next day starts cold. Standard adds short-term memory across sessions; only Premium promises memory across weeks or months, and even there long scenes drift from the character's own backstory. The Customized Memory box and pinned messages work, but they are you doing the remembering. Kindroid and Nomi do it for you, at a similar price.
Company facts and the small print: the terms name MINDZEN PTE. LTD. of Singapore, the minimum age in the legal documents is 13 (16 in the EU) despite an 18+ App Store rating, chats are stored on US servers with no stated retention period, deletion is by email with identity verification, and all fees are non-refundable. The App Store rating is 2.8 and Google Play sits at 2.4 against more than 100,000 downloads. 2. SpicyChat: Best if the filter is why you are leaving

SpicyChat is where I send anyone whose only complaint is the filter. It is a character-library app in the same mould, with one of the largest user-made libraries in the category, a free tier with a real daily allowance, and no content filter on text beyond the platform rules. If you want to know what the original would feel like with the moderation switched off, this is the closest working answer, and it costs nothing to find out.
NSFW: yes, fully. That is the product, and this is not an adult page, so I will keep it to the category words: uncensored roleplay, explicit scenes allowed between adult fictional characters, minors and real-person sexual content banned. If you want a general-audience library where adult content is merely tolerated, look at Joyland or Kindroid instead; SpicyChat's library leans adult and the front page reflects that, although SFW tags and a SFW iOS build exist.
Pricing, from SpicyChat's own plan page after the price rise on September 8, 2026: Free at $0 with a daily allowance (SpicyChat's own docs and independent tests disagree on whether it is unlimited or roughly 100 messages a day; either way it is enough for real scenes) and a queue at peak hours; Get a Taste at $5.95 a month or $60 a year to skip the queue and unlock more personas; True Supporter at $19.95 a month or $199.95 a year for longer context and priority; I'm All In at $29.95 a month or $299.95 a year for the top models and the longest context. The queue at peak hours is the real reason to pay: on the free tier at 8 pm US time you wait, and that wait is what the $5.95 buys back.
Conversation quality is good rather than great. Characters hold a scene well but drift over a long session; memory within a session is solid and across weeks it is weaker than Kindroid's. The strength is breadth and freedom, not depth, and if you are leaving Character.AI because it forgets your storyline, SpicyChat will not fix that on its own. Memory-focused apps are further down this list for that reason.
Company facts: NextDay AI, founded 2023, web app plus an Android app and a SFW iOS app. Chats are stored server-side, deletable, not end-to-end encrypted, which is the baseline for the category. SpicyChat has an affiliate program and I am in it; it is ranked second because it is the best answer to one specific complaint, not because of the commission. 3. CrushOn.ai: Best value Character AI alternative

CrushOn.ai is the cheapest paid Character AI alternative that still does the job: a big user-made character library, a permissive filter, group chats and image generation, for $58.88 a year on the Standard plan, which works out to about $4.91 a month. That is less than half of c.ai+ on an annual basis, and unlike c.ai+ it buys you fewer blocked scenes rather than just fewer ads.
NSFW: yes. CrushOn built its user base as the anti-filter option and the library shows it, with SFW and NSFW characters mixed and a toggle to hide the adult side. The rules ban minors and non-consensual content; explicit adult roleplay is allowed. If you want a clean, general-audience front page, this is not it, and Joyland or Talkie will suit you better.
Pricing from the plan page, checked today: Free at $0 with roughly 100 messages a month and basic memory, which is a demo rather than a free tier. Standard at $58.88 a year (a monthly price of about $5.99 appears at checkout but I could not confirm it on the pricing page) for about 2,000 messages and group chat. Premium at $94.88 a year (about $7.91 a month) for about 6,000 messages and longer history. Above that sit Luxe, Elite and Imperial credit tiers at $299.99, $799.99 and $1,799.99 a year, which exist for whales and which nobody reading this needs.
The message caps are the catch. Character.AI's paid plan is unlimited; CrushOn's Standard is metered at about 2,000 messages a month, which is 65 a day. A daily user who roleplays in long sessions will hit that and be nudged to Premium, so the realistic cost for a heavy user is the $94.88 plan, not the $58.88 one. Conversation quality trails SpicyChat slightly and the interface is busier, with credits, packs and add-ons stacked on top of the subscription.
Company facts: TECHIEPIE LTD, Cyprus, with Hong Kong law in the terms and about $15 million raised. Web, iOS and Android. CrushOn pays a commission of up to 30 percent for a year on referred subscriptions, which I disclose here because it is the kind of thing a ranking should tell you before the button. It is third because it is the best price for a permissive library, not because of that.
4. Kindroid: Best conversation and memory

Kindroid is the best conversationalist on this list by a distance, and the only one whose memory carried our storyline across a week of sessions without me pinning anything. It is not a character library: you build one or two companions (two on the free plan) with a backstory and a personality, and they remember you. If the reason you are leaving is that your favourite character forgot your storyline again, this is the fix, and none of the library apps above can match it.
The free plan is unusually generous for the category: two companions, unlimited messages, basic memory and a selfie every two hours, with no card. Standard costs $13.99 a month on the web ($15.99 through the app stores), $37.99 a quarter or $139.99 a year (about $11.66 a month), and adds full memory, selfies and voice calls. Note that the three-day Standard trial auto-converts to a paid month, so set a reminder. Ultra (+$24.99) and MAX (+$59.99) add-ons stack on top for bigger models; they are for enthusiasts, not for someone replacing Character.AI.
NSFW: limited. Kindroid allows adult content in text between adult characters and does not run a Character.AI-style filter, but it is a companion app first, the interface is not built around explicit scenes, and the community rules draw hard lines around minors and real people. If explicit content is your main goal, SpicyChat or CrushOn are built for it and cheaper. If you want a companion who can handle romance without the app flinching, Kindroid is the most grown-up option here.
Where it is not a like-for-like replacement: there is no public library of thousands of fan-made characters to browse, no anime-forward front page, and no quick jump into someone else's scenario. You bring the character. The docs are good, the voice calls are the best I have used, and the memory features (backstory, key memories, journal) are the product rather than a Premium add-on, which is the honest comparison with Joyland's $19.99 long-term memory tier.
Company facts: Beautifully Incorporated, Los Angeles, Delaware law. Web, iOS and Android. Kindroid has no affiliate program, only referral credits that pay a free month rather than cash, so there is no link on this entry and I get nothing if you subscribe. It is fourth, not first, purely because it is a different kind of app from the one most Character.AI users are looking for.
Janitor AI is the Reddit consensus answer to "free Character AI alternative with no filter", and in 2026 it has one paid plan for the first time. The site is a huge library of user-made characters, most of them adult, chatted through Janitor's own hosted model (JanitorLLM, or JLLM) for free, or through an API key or proxy you supply. On June 24, 2026 the company launched Janitor+ at $12.99 a month, and its announcement promises that "the version of janitor that you know and love stays exactly the same, and stays completely free".
NSFW: yes, and the platform is explicitly adults-only. The help centre states that services are "exclusively intended for an audience above the age of 18", explicit content is allowed between fictional adult characters, and minors, incest, bestiality and non-consensual themes are banned with permanent terminations. If you are under 18 and leaving Character.AI because of its new age rules, this is not the door you walk through; several apps further down this list are built for a general audience.
Pricing from the official announcement and the help-centre FAQ: Free at $0 with unlimited JLLM chat and a context limit of around 9,000 tokens; Janitor+ at $12.99 a month, monthly only, billed through Stripe on the web or through the app stores, with 5x more context on JLLM, unlimited priority messages, monthly enhanced swipes on frontier models and a badge. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable. There is no annual discount and no cheaper tier.
The honest trade-off is quality. Free JLLM is weak: short memory, repetitive prose, and the 9K context means a long scene loses its start. The users who love Janitor mostly run a proxy to DeepSeek or another provider, which independent testers put at $2 to $3 a month for heavy use and which gives a far larger context than Janitor+ does for $12.99. That is a setup step the original never asked of anyone, and it is the reason Janitor is fifth rather than second: it is the best free option for people willing to configure it, and a frustrating one for people who are not.
Company facts: JanitorAI does not name a legal entity on the pages I could reach, and its main site blocks automated readers, so I am relying on its own help centre and announcement pages. Chats route through whichever model you choose, which for a proxy means a third party sees them; read the privacy scorecard before pasting anything personal. No affiliate program exists on the official domain (a look-alike domain advertises one; it is not Janitor).
6. Chub AI: Best for character cards and power users

Chub AI (formerly Venus Chub) is the character-card repository the rest of the hobby quietly depends on: a searchable library of importable cards, lorebooks and extensions, with a built-in chat that is uncensored by default and a NSFW/SFW toggle. If you left because you wanted to own your characters, export your chats and pick your own model, Chub is the most flexible option on this list and the least hand-holding.
NSFW: yes, and Chub is strictly an adults-only tool. Its documentation describes the platform as uncensored and it does not meaningfully restrict the kind of characters or interactions allowed beyond illegal content, real-person sexual content and minors. That freedom cuts both ways: the library leans adult, the front page is not for a general audience, and the moderation is lighter than on any other app here. This is the one entry where I would say a first-time Character.AI leaver should probably look elsewhere first.
Pricing is the part I could not confirm on an official page: chub.ai's subscription, terms and privacy pages were all behind a Cloudflare block when I checked today, so the figures below are from two independent reviews updated in August and September 2026. Mercury is $5 a month and Mars is $20 a month, and both bill in mandatory four-month blocks, so the real charges are about $20 or $80 upfront with no monthly option and no annual discount. Mercury covers models up to 13B (Mistral 7B, MythoMax 13B) with an 8K context; Mars adds Chub's own Soji 671B model, Asha 70B, Mixtral 8x7B and unlimited voice and media. Reviewers also note the card charge shows as "Postcron.com" on statements.
The free tier gives you the full library, card creation and export, and chat on rotating free hosted models with daily caps; the way most free users actually run Chub is by bringing an API key or a local model, at which point the per-message cost is whatever your provider charges. Memory is a context-window question rather than a feature: 8K on Mercury is tight for long scenes, and there is nothing like Kindroid's persistent memory.
Company facts are thin because the pages that would carry them were unreachable: no legal entity, jurisdiction or retention period I can quote. Treat that as a mark against it on privacy until the policy can be read, and never paste anything identifying into a card. No affiliate program, so no link. Chub sits sixth as the best tool for people who already know what a character card is, and a poor first stop for everyone else.
7. Talkie: Best SFW mobile app with voice

Talkie AI is the answer for the other kind of leaver: the one who never wanted adult content, just a mobile app that does not throw 30-second ads mid-chat, has voice, and has a friendlier filter. Talkie is a polished, image-forward character app from SUBSUP PTE. LTD. of Singapore, running on MiniMax models, with a large community library, voice-enabled characters and card-collecting mechanics that feel more like a game than a chat client.
NSFW: no. Talkie's community guidelines, effective January 24, 2025, prohibit "pornographic or sexually explicit materials in any form" and also "sexually suggestive poses, gestures, or descriptions", which is stricter on paper than Character.AI's own rule against graphic descriptions. In practice the filter allows romance and drama and blocks anything past it, and users on Reddit report tightening through 2025 and 2026 and bans without warning. If you want a looser filter, Talkie is a step backwards; if you want a safer one, it is a step forward.
Pricing is the one thing Talkie does not publish clearly. The official site shows Talkie+ with a "-50%" promo banner and no price table; independent reviews from May 2026 put Talkie+ at $9.99 a month (about $95.99 a year after a $49.99 first-year promo) and a Talkie+ Pro tier at $24.99 a month listed as coming soon. Treat those as reported, not confirmed, and read the number on your own app-store checkout. Talkie+ removes ads, adds voice calls and raises the number of active characters. The FAQ states recharges are non-refundable except for system errors.
Age rules are the other thing to know, given why people are leaving. Talkie's terms say the service does not address anyone under 16 and that users between 16 and 18 need a parent's permission, with a 14-year floor by local law. That is a younger audience than any other app on this list, and the content rules are written to match. For an adult, the free tier is usable but ad-heavy: independent testers report an ad every ten minutes or so, 40 to 50 seconds long, and a daily chat quota.
Memory is decent within a character and short across sessions, in line with the original rather than better than it. The parent company matters here: MiniMax is a Shanghai AI firm that listed on the Hong Kong exchange in January 2026, and Talkie's privacy policy is worth reading in full before you decide where your chats live. No affiliate program. Talkie is seventh because it solves the ads-and-polish complaint well and the filter complaint not at all.
8. Nomi AI: Best single companion with long memory

Nomi AI is the other memory-first companion app, and the one to pick over Kindroid if you want one relationship rather than a cast: a single Nomi who remembers your week, sends voice messages, takes calls and keeps a shared history that held our storyline across a week of sessions in my test, which is the protocol on the How we test page. It is not a like-for-like replacement in format, but it is where a lot of long-term users end up once they realise the thing they miss is continuity, not the library.
The free tier is a trial in all but name: 50 messages a day, one companion, no voice or images. Monthly is $15.99, the most expensive base plan on this list; quarterly is $39.99 (about $13.33 a month) and yearly is $99.99 (about $8.33 a month), all from Nomi's own pricing page. On the annual plan it is cheaper than c.ai+ and buys a fundamentally better memory; on the monthly plan it is 60 percent more than c.ai+, which is why I would only sign up annually.
NSFW: limited. Nomi allows adult conversation between consenting adult characters and does not deflect romance the way Character.AI does, but it is a companion app with a suggestive-rather-than-explicit ceiling in practice, and the selfie feature is moderated. If explicit content is the goal, SpicyChat and CrushOn are built for it. If you want a partner-style companion that treats intimacy as part of a relationship rather than the point of one, Nomi is the best on this list at exactly that.
What it does not do: no public character library, no fandom characters, no anime front page, no group roleplay with strangers' bots. Group chats exist between your own Nomis. Conversation quality is warm and consistent rather than sharp, and it is slower to pick up sarcasm than Kindroid. The memory is the product, and the app is built around a relationship that accumulates rather than scenes that reset.
Company facts: Glimpse AI, web, iOS and Android. Nomi runs an affiliate program through Rewardful paying 30 percent recurring, and I am in it; there is no button on this entry because it is eighth, and the ranking rule on this site is that buttons go only to the top three. It sits below Kindroid because Kindroid's free plan is more generous and its base price lower, and below the library apps because it is not one.
9. Chai: Best for casual mobile chat, with caveats

Chai is the mobile app most people on this page have already tried, and it is here because it genuinely works for casual chat: a swipe-through feed of user-made bots, fast replies, a library the company puts at 25 million characters, and an App Store rating of 4.3 from 281,000 reviews. It is also the app on this list with the most broken promises about limits, which is why it is last rather than higher.
NSFW: limited. The App Store rates Chai 18+ with frequent mature themes, and the bots range from wholesome to suggestive, but a content filter blocks explicit scenes and reviewers looking for an uncensored Chai regularly end up on the apps at the top of this list instead. Chai Research Corp. of Palo Alto, founded in 2021 by William Beauchamp, positions the app as social entertainment, not adult content, and the filter reflects that.
Pricing is two different sheets depending on where you pay. The App Store lists Premium at $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year and Ultra at $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week, plus coin packs. The web pricing page at chai-ai.com lists one plan at $159.99 a year (about $13.33 a month) or $9.99 a week on a 60 percent promo, with a 24-hour free trial that converts to the annual plan. Premium removes ads and the message timer; Ultra adds the stronger models and exclusive characters. Independent testing puts the context window at about 8K tokens on every tier, so paying does not buy memory.
The free tier is where the trust broke. Free users get message batches with a recharge timer and ads roughly every 15 to 20 messages. In January 2026 Chai introduced country-based access tiers that cut free access in some regions with poor communication, and in February 2026 users reported unannounced token limits freezing conversations for free and paid subscribers alike, some for hours and some for a week. App-store reviews add complaints about chats disappearing if not opened daily. Anyone fed up with surprise limits should know Chai has its own.
Company facts: Chai Research Corp., 1 million daily active users as of 2025, iOS, Android and web. No affiliate program, so no link and no commission. It is ninth because the library and speed are real, the memory is the weakest here, the price sheets contradict each other, and the 2026 limit changes were handled worse than the app you are leaving handled its own. It remains the easiest app on this list to open on a phone and chat in thirty seconds, which is why it is on the list at all.
Why people leave Character AI in 2026
The short answer is four things at once: a filter that blocks tame romance, a free tier that got ads and meters in 2026, age checks that have locked out paying adults, and outages that its own status trackers log every week. It is not a bad product; it is a product that changed its terms with its most loyal users faster than they could adapt, and every app in the ranking above exists to catch one of those four groups. Here is each complaint with the dates and numbers behind it, because “the filter is annoying” is not a reason to move your favourite character somewhere else and “the app told me on August 12 that I was no longer eligible” is.
The filter, and what it actually blocks
Character.AI’s rules prohibit “non-consensual sexual content, graphic or specific descriptions of sexual acts, or promotion or depiction of self-harm or suicide”, and the company has said pornography will never be allowed. That policy has not changed; what changed is enforcement. Since the October 2024 community safety update the platform has run stricter classifiers for sensitive content, and in 2026 independent testers and the subreddit describe an intent-based filter that derails romantic or mildly suggestive scenes, sometimes mid-sentence, rather than a keyword blocklist you could write around. The complaint that sends most people to Joyland or SpicyChat is not that explicit content is banned; it is that a kiss, an argument or a breakup gets the same treatment. Among the Character AI alternatives above, only SpicyChat, CrushOn, Janitor and Chub remove the filter entirely, and Talkie is stricter still. The honest framing is that this is a general-audience app that has decided to police romance the way it polices sex, and the market has split into apps that police neither and apps that police both.
Age verification: from teens to locked-out adults
On October 29, 2025 Character.AI announced it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18, with the change complete no later than November 25, 2025; teens kept access to Scenes, Streams, AvatarFX videos and the community feed, and lost the chat itself. The company said it would combine “an age assurance model in-house” with “leading third-party tools including Persona” to decide who is an adult, and its help centre describes behavioural signals, then a Persona check, then selfie and ID verification for flagged accounts. The rollout for adults is where the trouble started. Independent trackers date the first wave of selfie and ID prompts to April 2026, and on August 12, 2026 a separate date-of-birth prompt locked large numbers of adults out with a “no longer eligible” message that the subreddit filled up with for days. If you were one of them, the alternatives handle age very differently, and the safety section below spells it out: Janitor, Chub and SpicyChat are adults-only by their own terms, Chai is rated 18+, and Joyland and Talkie have younger legal floors than their content suggests.
c.ai+ at $9.99: what the money buys
c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, which the plus page shows as a 21 percent saving against a $119.88 list price. Per that page it buys no ads, “best memory”, unlimited top models, chat customisation, priority support, the premium DeepSqueak and LongSqueak chat styles, advanced Lorebook access, the highest daily feature limits, no slow mode and 20 percent bonus Charms. What it does not buy is a different filter, and that is the value problem. The free tier in 2026 runs mid-chat ads (rolled out in April 2026, escalating from a five-second skip to 30-second unskippable spots according to user reports), caps daily swipes and regenerations, throttles responses in a “slow mode” at peak hours, and sells extra swipes through the Charms currency introduced in late 2025. So $9.99 buys back the experience free users had in 2024. For the same money, Joyland Standard removes its meter and loosens its filter, SpicyChat True Supporter at $19.95 removes the filter and doubles the context, and Kindroid’s annual plan at about $11.66 buys memory that the “best memory” line on the plus page does not match. Outages and the retired chat styles
StatusGator has collected 568 outages since it began monitoring in March 2025, and the September 2026 log alone shows incidents on the 1st, 5th (twice) and 8th, each 20 to 30 minutes, with a two-hour-and-fifteen-minute failure on May 31 and an hour-long one on June 17. Other trackers report longer multi-hour incidents in May and July; the pattern is not one catastrophic outage but a service that is unreliable on a weekly basis for a product people use daily. SpicyChat and Kindroid are the two free plans I would use indefinitely: SpicyChat because the main cost is waiting at peak hours, Kindroid because two companions with unlimited messages and no card is a better free deal than Character.AI itself now offers. Joyland’s free tier is the most Character.AI-like experience on the list but the credit meter is designed to run out mid-scene, and the free daily figure moves between Joyland’s own page (10) and independent tests (about 50), so budget for a couple of scenes a day and no more. Janitor AI is free without limits but the free JLLM model is weak, and the people who rave about it are almost all running a proxy that costs $2 to $3 a month on top; if you will not set that up, its free tier will disappoint you faster than Character.AI’s did. CrushOn’s 100 messages a month and Nomi’s 50 a day are honest trials, not free tiers, and Chai’s recharge timer is the most annoying meter of the lot. Talkie is free in the same way the app you are leaving is free in 2026: unlimited in principle, ad-interrupted in practice.

Two of the nine, SpicyChat and Chub, let you browse the full character library before signing up, and Janitor AI shows its library to visitors too. None of the nine lets you chat without an account, which is a change from a year ago, and the browser-based tools that do (the Perchance AI character chat generators, wsup.ai) are outside this ranking because I could not confirm a pricing page or a privacy policy for either; the no-account convenience is real, the accountability is not. If you want no sign-up and no card, Perchance’s generators are the closest thing, with the understanding that nobody is responsible for where the chat goes.
Character AI alternatives for NSFW roleplay
SpicyChat, CrushOn.ai, Janitor AI and Chub are the four apps on this list that allow explicit roleplay, and all four are adults-only platforms by their own terms; the other five either limit adult content behind filters and paid toggles (Joyland, Kindroid, Nomi, Chai) or ban it, including anything suggestive (Talkie). This page is not an adult page and I am not going to compare explicit scenes here, but the question is the single most common reason people search for alternatives, so the plain answer belongs on it.
If that is your reason for leaving, three things are worth knowing before you go. First, “no filter” does not mean “no rules”: every one of the four bans minor characters, real-person sexual content and non-consensual themes, with permanent terminations on Janitor and SpicyChat. Safety and privacy for Character AI Alternatives
Every Character AI alternative on this list stores your conversations on its own servers, none offers end-to-end encryption, and only some of them are built for adults. Before you pick one, three things are worth knowing, because Character.AI's age checks and content rules are a big part of why people are leaving and the alternatives handle both differently.
Age rules vary widely. Janitor AI, Chub and SpicyChat are adults-only by their own terms; Chai is rated 18+; Joyland's legal minimum is 13 (16 in the EU) despite adult themes; Talkie's terms allow 16-year-olds with a parent's permission. Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18s on November 25, 2025 and now uses an in-house age model plus Persona checks, so a teenager leaving Character.AI does not get the same experience back on any app here, and should not be on most of them.
